Why Only 1,000 Signed Copies — and Why That Number Matters

When K&R House Press and I decided to limit the Signed Collector Edition to 1,000 copies, people thought we were being precious. We weren't. We were being honest about what a signed, numbered, personalized edition actually is.

A mass-market book is a conversation between a writer and an unknown future. You write knowing your book will be read by people you'll never meet, in years you won't live to see, in countries you've never been to. That's beautiful. That's what publishing is for.

A signed, numbered edition is something different. It's specific. It's a record of a particular moment of connection — this reader, this copy, this story, this year. CHP-0001 through CHP-1000 will each be different. Each will have the buyer's name embedded in the book itself — in a dedication, on a page Malik touches, in a way that makes it, quietly and permanently, theirs.

I'm signing each one personally. Not stamped. Not automated. My signature, because I was here, and so were you, and this book was written for that kind of witness.

1,000 because that's how many I can do with the attention they deserve. More than that and the meaning dilutes. The personalization becomes less personal. The signature becomes performance rather than intention.

The Signed Collector Edition also includes the audiobook — my voice reading a story I spent five years writing — and the private author letter, which is the most honest thing I've written. It's the letter I couldn't put inside the book because it's not fiction. It's just me, talking to the reader who held on long enough to get here.

If you're considering it: the counter started at zero on May 8, 2026. Those 1,000 numbers will not be offered again. Once CHP-1000 is claimed, the edition closes.

This is the book I wrote. The signed edition is the version I made for the people who wanted to hold it close.
