The Book
When K&R House Press and I decided to limit the Signed Collector Edition to 1,000 copies, people thought we were being precious. We weren't. We were being honest about what a signed, numbered, personalized edition actually is.
Themes
Redemption is not the same as forgiveness. Redemption is something you earn. Forgiveness is something you give — or can't, or won't, and have to live with either way. Cedar Hollow Promises is about both, and the distance between them.
The Music
Every book I've ever loved has a sound. Not a playlist someone made — a sound. A texture. Cedar Hollow Promises has always, since the first draft, sounded like steel guitar played very slowly over a gospel choir that's decided to let the grief in.
Research & Writing
My first draft of Malik's years inside was wrong in the way that well-intentioned outside perspectives are usually wrong: it was too clean, too literary, too much about what prison does to the soul and not enough about what it does to Tuesdays.
Behind the Story
Summer 1992. The old mill outside Cedar Hollow. A lie told in a moment that rearranged every life it touched. I've been asked a hundred times: why Kiki? Why would she do it? I want to answer that honestly.
Character Notes
Every draft of Cedar Hollow Promises had a version of Lena who waited. Who endured. Who was written as the still center of someone else's storm. I kept rewriting her until she finally talked back.

The summer of 1992 wasn't arbitrary. It was the last summer before everything — before cellular phones erased distance, before mass incarceration became a national conversation, before the particular silence that follows a betrayal could be interrupted by a text message.
